Strength:

Good picture quality on DVD

Weakness:

Geometry!!!! Picture quality of cable grainy, specially given the price!

Wonder if anyone can help me out here...
I purchased a new Sony WEGA KV-32FS12 and have exchanged it 3 times now, but each piece has the following geometry problem:

1. Scrolling lines e.g. tickers on CNBC are kind of wavy with the line tilting downwards on the bottom right. The tilt option does not help since the problem is only at the bottom. In fact measured the hieght of ticker and there is almost 1/2" difference between left end and right end.

2. Light vertical shadow line of the left hand side of the screen - evident only on bright background.

3. Grainy picture on normal cable.

Problems 1 and 2 are the reason why we exchanged it and even called up Sony, but Sony refuses to accept this as a problem even though a tech guy mentioned that it is an issue with the convergence board.

Now the store is not ready to accept this as a problem as it seems they have never heard of this at all! Would appreciate any inputs if anyone else has been through the same. I had read on audioreview.com that there are some secret codes to a menu that could fix this. any thoughts?

Thanks.

Strength:

Picture Quality ! almost no reflections on the screen, 4 inputs, very low distortion of lines or colors (non existent compared to conventional tubes)

Weakness:

Why only one Super VHS input ?? with DSS, S-VHS laser disc and webtv, I could use it on all the inputs. You can use internal speakers OR external line out, but not both.

I have the newer KV-32FS12 moodel. This thing has a great picture, and very little if any pincussion/barrel distortion in straight lines. I have seen none of the color bleed on current madels that earlier versions had. I use webTV, so vidio distortion is a big deal and easy to see (and I am EXTREMELY happy with this TV !).
I wish the internal speakers didn't shut off when you select the line out audio. Sometimes you just want to watch the weather without turning the whole system on or waking up everyone in the house. My 13" wega is MUCH sharper, and beats it in every respect but sound and size :)

Picture clarity, Composite video inputs, flat glare free screen

Weakness:

Yet to be discovered!!

After biting the bullet and spending the money on what I initially thought was nothing more than a glorified flat screen television, I couldn't be more satisfied with this set and wouldn't trade it for anything! My initial discovery was it's incredible weight, at 176 Lbs it's a monster to move. Some people see this as a weakness, to me it's just another testament to it's outstanding quality. I have this set coupled with the matching Stand which is an engineering marvel in itself. The engineers actually provide a safety strap at the rear of the set so it can be tethered to the stand for safety purposes and keep it from tipping (very unlikely at this weight!)
My only discovered weakness was it's inability to pick-up any channels without a strong input source, but a set of this quality deserves a good source so I hooked into a StarChoice digital Satelite system which delivers outstanding picture quality with crystal clear sharp vivid pictures that are virtually glare free. There are numerous preset picture settings that you can use or create any desired effect you like as the level of adjustability with the picture qaulity settings are endless.
The sound from the set is pretty impressive as well which in itself can offer different ambiences for sports, movies, etc.
Now connected to a Panasonic DVD player, I'm taking advantage of the sets Component video inputs, watching DVD's on this set is a thing of beauty. It's hard to believe that HDTV can get any better!
As for the dark bars on the sides or quality problems in the corners, I've not seen any such occurrences yet, either on my own set or on the dozen or more that I've seen in show rooms since purchasing mine.
This set comes highly recomended, I think it's an excellent value that verges on the quality of HDTV at a fraction of the price. The tonne of available user options & video inputs make this a set that's also ready for some longevity in our unstable format war.

Strength:

Picture, color controls, inputs, 4 picture modes, 2 s-videos

Weakness:

Weight ( need to buy stand )

I paid 1700$ total for this tv with stand and warranty, and it was worth every penny. DVD's look amazing; more like a window less like a TV. The Air Force One DVD looks just amazing; the explosions are sharp and bright, views of the jets in the blue/dark sky look unreal and breathtaking.

You can really tell the difference between new and old transfers like Aliens and Rush Hour. EVERYTHING about the DVD's I rent have new life, like the opening/ending credits, company logos before the films like Columbia/Tri Star look spectacular alone, and menus.

Don't forget to collaborate you picture with video essentials

Awsome Picture Quality!
Great Setup Menus

Weakness:

Price :^(

The has to be the best TV I have EVER owned! The color on this TV is outstanding. And after a little tug of war with Video Essentials, the pluge is set perfect.

One small compaint, does ANYBODY still use the tuner inside the TV anymore? Or the speakers for that matter? I think that Sony should produce a line of consumer "monitors" that home theater buffs. Cut out the crap that nobody uses and lower the price :^)

Also, if your holding out on buying this unit heres what I did to help me manage this purchase a little easier to handle.

5/28/00 - Called local K's Merchandise and was quoted $999
5/28/00 - Called local Circuit City and was quoted $1249
5/29/00 - Went to Circut City and got a price match & 1 year w/ 0% interest.

Strength:

Exceptional picture quality, color depth, minimal glare, neat design, excellent overall functionality in ANY home theater

Weakness:

Someone PLEASE tell me some

First of all let me say this T.V. is awesome. I first viewed it oversea's while stationed in Curacao. Of course the model I viewed was and oversea's exclusive model, 38". WOW. But don't trade your 32" and 36" just yet. They only make that in an overseas version. :( At least that's what the lady told me. To keep it short, picture quality is hands down the best I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. If your like me, just a regular Joe Schmo, it's just as good as some of those HDTV's. Now that statement only holds true if your like me, not an audiophile, just a casual listner that doesn't demand all the play pretties. If you like a great picture at a fraction of the cost, grab this t.v. You WILL NOT be disappointed. And just to touch on Rob's question below...16:9 is the anamorphic screen format. When you watch a widescreen movie on an older T.V., it only plays the picture in a 4:3 ratio. Hence, the letterbox, the black bars at the top and bottom of your screen. What their talking about is the ability of the T.V. to take a widescreen format and play it at 16:9 which does away with the black box look. Your t.v. will be able to play any format utilizing the entire screen. Does this VEGA have that, NO. These are analog t.v. sets, not digital, like HDTV's. Eventually they may release a box that attaches to your analog set giving you that 16:9 functionality. But as for now, if you want 16:9 you need to buy an HDTV, or a DVD written in 4:3 and 16:9. And as far as the video essentials is concerned, I have NO IDEA what their talking about. If anyone knows please pass it on, I LOVE playing with this t.v. By the way I rated value as a 4 because the t.v. was expensive. I understand that Sony ahd to re-invent the wheel when they made this t.v., but come on people, 1321.00 is a LOT of money. And for the overall rating, the mere idea of a "true" flatscreen analog t.v. deserves a 5. You know the good folks over at Sony could've said screw the analog flatscreen, go digital like everyone else. But luckily for us, the opted to take the alternative and give us the best of both worlds. My hats off to the folks over at Sony.

Strength:

Great picture and everything else.

Weakness:

No PIP
At 176 lbs. out of the box, have one of your strong friends aroud to help.

After doing some considerable research in the 32" TV market, I decided to go with this model. The trouble was I having trouble finding one under the MSRP of $1299. I came across this one at a fairly new Best Buy in my area and was told that they have been discontinued by Sony to make room for the 2000 series. So I bought the floor model for a steal at $799 plus $119 for four years of in home part and labor. I just love this TV, the picture quality is very sharp when using DVD and VHS(kid's tapes, although it's a little grainy with my conventional cable TV. I highly reccommend that you keep your eyes open for some bargains as these sets maybe going away.

Strength:

Great picture. Very adjustable picture. Plenty of I/O. Good set-up screens.

Weakness:

poor sound - although it is not used with my system

Went to buy another Toshiba and was blown away by the WEGA! It wasn't even close - all other sets look as if they were 10 year old technology. Kind of like early computer monitors compared to a new Mitsubishi or Sony. Toshiba's and regular Sony's were not sharp and they had noticable color bleeding. Of course the WEGA was $250 to $350 more than the regular Sony's and Toshiba's.
I paid $925 for the set and my back still aches from moving it. This is the analog set you can buy for at least 1/3 the price of digital. The picture is far better than any other analog set that I viewed.

Strength:

Oustanding Picture. When playing DVD's using Component Video, you would think it's a Digital TV. Power Conditioner Cleans up my cable tv, and that helps a lot because this TV is so Clear that it is unforgiving of bad signals. My Speakers are the same way. So that is a good thing.

Weakness:

No Anamorphic Widescreen Compression. Meaning, it doesn't take widescreen movies and get rid of the black bars for you. As everyone is aware, price is pretty steep. But understandable if you look at what R&D costs were on this piece. Also, it looks like a digital TV almost. And it doesn't cost NEARLY as much as any one of those sets.

Overall, this is an excellent piece. As mentioned above, it is the most affordable TV this side of HDTV.
And with slow rate at which people are embracing HDTV, it will last until they are finally mainstream.... Meaning that more than the richest 1% of US households can afford one.
I am very happy with the way it looks not only on Regular Cable, but also with DVD's. Using Component Video is just about the best picture your going to see anywhere.
Don't care about the sound at all, since I have Home Theatre. Does anyone use the TV Speakers anymore, ... hint hint Sony Marketing Research Department??? That would lower the cost on this TV. Other than that, the weight doesn't bother me. I am a person who has the mindset of "The Heavier, the Better". It has proven true with recievers and many other things. The unit feels and looks solid, not like a cheap assembly line mid-80's American Car. I paid $981.26 Shipped to my Home Theatre Room. They took it in my house and set it on top of the stand for me. Now is the time to buy, since they are moving out the old models for the new ones. Would've bought this off the net but the shipping prices and options were insane.
