Strength:

Great picture through my Toshiba SD-4205 DVD player using the component video jacks. I also usually run the audio through my home theatre sound system and DVD's are awesome!

Weakness:

None that I've found.

Outstanding value! Beautiful picture! At first, I noticed vertical lines were curved at the top corners. This was apparent in pictures as well as the box surrounding the PIP. I had a technician from Best Buy come out and he accessed the "technicians menu" (not published for consumers) and was able to correct the flaw. BEWARE! If you bring these sets home and set them up yourself, you might have similar problems (or others) that ought to be adjusted by a qualified technician. It's under warranty, so why not call 'em!
I was lucky enough to find this set on an incredible sale just before Christmas: $698 and I took an open box item that was returned because it was too large for the previous purchasers wall unit. They took off an additional 10%. Amazing!

Strength:

Size, color saturation, clarity, resolution

Weakness:

SOME WEIRD "SCAN LINE" PROBLEMS, remote is awkward.

Purchased at Best Buy with the 10% discount (36A40-Same set, no PIP). Picture clarity and color are outstanding. After altering the lighting setup in the room (too much glare) we were very pleased with the set BUT...and this is a big BUT: there are noticeable and distracting horizontal lines on the set whenever the camera pans up or down. Very distracting, especially on bright scenes. Still images are perfect. Am I supposed to expect these anomalies in a set this size at this price range? Or, is something wrong with the tube? I have a DVD hooked up through the composite video, cable direct in from converter box, audio out to a HT system. I have tried every tweak to remove these lines (menu settings, removing all input cables and output cables, different receptacles, etc.) Anybody know what's wrong here? Email me at BMH216@aol.com if you have any suggestions. I do not want to keep this set if these problems persist. Would have given better rating if not for this problem.

Strength:

Excellet picture and sound. Even when using the built in speakers. I highly recommend this tv to everyone.

Weakness:

REMOTE CONTROL. Its shaped odd, and the buttons are too small.

I did quite a bit of research before buying a 32" tv. I was convinced to get a Sony, but after reading the review here and talking with a few people I chose the Toshiba 32A40. I could not be happier with my decision. Excellent picture!!!!All I need now is a DVD player and I will be set. I already have a JVC DS-TP330 home theater. This TV is wonderful except for the remote control. Also would like to find some info on setting up with my digital cable box and the home theater....any suggetions?

Strength:

Vibrant Colors, Component Input

Weakness:

None

I have had my 36A40 for about 4 months and I could not be more pleased. DVD and DSS input look excellent. My one minor nitpicking gripe is I can't get the top-right corner geometry perfect, but all big sets have these issues. Its not glaring just about the only thing I can gripe about. Oh, I guess the remote could be done better, but I use a Sony RM-VL900 which I adore.

Once calibrated, these look every bit as good as the Wegas which are about double the price on 36".

I originally was going to buy a Wega until space constraints ruled out the Sony (4" wider and 30 pounds heavier). I purchased mine 'open-box' the week Best Buy began carrying them (the stocker had accidentally opened 2 to put on display ... so the 10% off was cool).

Definitely a 10 star value as they are amoung the cheapest 36" sets.

Strength:

Vibrant colors,great value

Weakness:

None considering the performance/value ratio

I bought a Sony Wega which had some major geometry problems(had heard those were taken
care of in this new model-apparently not). The Sony
may have a slightly better pic than the Toshiba on SOME sources, but the Toshiba is better when all sources are accounted for(satellite, broadcast tv,DVDs,VCR tapes,etc.).A tremendous value.
Also, the Sony is actually worse on glare.Images of a lamp or window are much smaller on a curved screen(Toshiba),even though it includes a "wider angle"than the Sony. The images of a reflection are huge on the Sony,so I often had to move to L or R to see around a reflection.just more advertising hype. And what is a 30 day labor warranty doing on a $1500 TV?The Toshiba's is a year IN HOME!

Strength:

incredible black level. good convergence. colour stream input a big plus for DVD.

Weakness:

VERY static sensitive when changing cables. speakers cannot be turned off.

the actual set that i purchased is the 32A60, 32" set.
but from what i could see at the store, it is very identical to the 36A50- other than size.
the black level holds up well- especially with the high APL pluge test on Joe Kane's Video Essentials DVD (this disc is a MUST if you are serious about REAL home theatre!).
the colour temperature control is a nice feature if you're into 'playing' with knobs. i am more of a set it for accuracy and forget it guy.
this unit is VERY static sensitive!!! i rran the set for the first day with just the composite lines from my DVD player and satelite, but then dicided to try the colour stream inouts with the DVD and the S-video with the satellite. i guess i should have unplugged the set first, because after the connections were made, the set would not power up, or would do so intermittantly. the only solution was to unplug the set for at least 20 minutes. after that, the set worked fine. weird, huh?
the speakers are another minor problem. regardless of where the volume is set, you can hear a faint hiss from them. i don't use the set's spekers, as it is in a home theatre set-up. i've had more than one person make this observation. this is not a good thing when you can hear what sounds like a bicycle tire deflating in your home theatre room during a quiet scene. but how i do love the picture...
5 stars for value- you really do get a lot of TV for the bucks
only 3 stars because of the static and 'hissy' speakers.

Strength:

Component Inputs, Excellent Picture!!

Weakness:

White text seems blurry when on black backround. IE. Credits of a movie. Remote.

This review is for the 32A40. This TV is great. I have it hooked up to my JVC XV525 DVD player via component inputs and the picture is amazing!! This is one of the best TV's for the price that comes with component inputs.

awesome price, picture quality, and color stream component inputs

Weakness:

cant shut built in speakers not really a big deal!

this 36" monster is awesome it blows away anything in the price dept. I got luck went to sears saw the $750 price tag and was going to buy it they told me they had none left in the box so sold me the floor unit with not a scratch on it for $500. this tv is heavy but you know when somethings heavy it feels well built! I am a video game player I currently have a ps2, n64, dreamcast, saturn, neo geo gold, snes, genesis, amiga cd32, and an old atari jaguar all hooked up to this unit through two selectable swith boxes. This tv rocks with my grand turismo 3 demo. Get this tv its a must then relax and watch your favorite dvd.

Strength:

Great Picture!! Fair amount of inputs in back.

Weakness:

Remote, needs front inputs.

I read many favorable reviews for this tv and when the discount/coupon planets aligned, I couldn't resist. I think the picture is outstanding, no complaints there. My only real complaint is I feel the remote sucks!! The menu button and the down channel button are way to close and I constantly hit the menu button when channel surfing. I also think the tv/vcr selector on the side of the remote will be worn out within a year. But I bought the tv for the picture and it doesn't disappoint.

How did I buy the tv for < $675.00? 800.com had it listed for 899.95 + 39.95 shipping = 935.90 before discounts
-10% (off all tv's over 32")
-20% (Microsoft passport deal)
-$30 coupon
=269.99 total discount
for a final delivered price of $669.91
